I love rugs. Especially woven cotton rugs with tassles that easily goes in the washer. The other day i spotted these beige rugs with pink stripes in Ikea and they were super cheap, about 3 dollar a piece. The only downside was, that they were rather small size, only about 55 x 80 centimeter, so I actually never bought them that day. While not being able to forget these cute rugs, I finally came to the conclusion, that I would make a bigger rug from several small rugs, by stitching the sides together. So off to IKEA again, where I bought four pink striped rugs, which I paid about 12 dollars for. The finished rug was to be 80 x 220 centimeter, which would make it a big and faily cheap rug.
My plan was to attach these four rugs, by stitching the connecting sides with a thick yarn, using a big crochet/embroidery needle. Now let’s take it step-by-step:
MATERIALS FOR THIS IKEA RUG HACK:
– 4 equal sized rugs
– Thick yarn
– Big needle
– Marker
– Scissor
STEP 1)
Start out by marking out the spacing of the stitches with a marker. I went with 1 cm from the edge and leaving 1,5 cm space between the stitch. Do this on all connecting sides.
STEP 2)
Start at one end, leaving a piece of yarn at the end, by looping your stitch through the rugs. You just go under, up and over for each stitch, and start again.
STEP 3)
When you have gone through a whole side, leave the thread at the end loose. Now go back to the beginning of the stitches and start by pulling the yarn thight. Make the rugs overlap, when thightening, and you’ll have a really solid stitched seam along the rug.
STEP 4)
No go to each end of the seam and secure the loose yarn, by creating a few knots in to the first couple of stitches. Cut off excess yarn.
STEP 5)
Go through step 1 – 4 for all your connecting sides.
Now when you are all done, you should be sitting with a big (bargain) rug with a beautiful handmade feel in front of you.
I have created a little summer reading nook on my terasse. This rug fits perfectly below my rocking chair and I just love how a simple rug can give an outdoor space a cozy indoor feeling.
