Knitted textiles are some of my favorites and I like making home decor projects from knitted old sweaters and blankets. The only downside can be when you start sewing in the material (with a machine that is) The knit will give and stretch a lot, which can make for an ugly seam. You can always choose to sew by hand and that way you will be more in control of the movement of the knit.
If you saw my earlier post Porch couch revamp with IKEA textiles, you probably noticed the three-piece couch seat cushion I made from a knitted blanket.
Below I will tell you how I made it.
STEP 1)
To make a three-seat cusion, I folded my blanket in half, measured out to divide the piece in three, marked were is was divided and then hand-stitched loosely with yarn along the marked lines. This would give me greater control when I was sewing.
STEP 2)
I chose to sew on the machine with long stitches along the hand-stitched seam, so the needle better grabed the knit and moved forward. Afterward I pulled out the yarn.
STEP 3)
I now had three 3 equal sized compartments in the knit, with room for filling. I used 2 pillow fillers for each compartment to create a more soft and thick look of each seat.
STEP 4)
To close the gaps at each compartment, I finished of by adding 4 rivet buttons for each section. It was an easy solution to the closure, no sewing required and the opening was to face the back of the couch anyway.
So all in all a pretty easy way to make your own three-piece couch seater.
